Discuss the goal and success of the 1987 Montreal Protocol

What will be an ideal response?

The goal of the Montreal Protocol was to reduce the global production and use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer that protects life on the planet from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, including skin cancer. The world community came together in 1987 to craft the Montreal Protocol, which has now been signed by over 190 nations. Because of the treaty, the production and use of CFCs has been phased out as countries have found replacement chemicals that are not as harmful to the ozone layer. Although it will take decades for the ozone layer to completely recover, the Montreal Protocol is widely considered to be the biggest success story thus far in addressing a global environmental problem.
