Briefly describe 4 guidelines for preparing for back-to-school night
What will be an ideal response?
Responses will vary, but should be from among the following:
• Make your classroom as neat and attractive as possible. Even though it's the beginning of the year, be sure you already have some student work displayed.
• Greet families at the door with a smile and firm handshake.
• Give families a handout that may include your background, a brief statement about the importance of your subject area, a list of needed materials/supplies, classroom management policies, grading policies, etc.
• Pass around a sign-in sheet asking for student name and family member name(s), as well as how they prefer to communicate.
• Prepare to speak for about 5 minutes and then welcome questions.
• Offer a clipboard on which families can request individual conferences. Back-to-school night is not the time to discuss individual students.
• Thank families for attending and express the need and desire for their participation throughout the year.
