You have a friend who is pregnant and wishes to continue exercising throughout her pregnancy. What activity guidelines would you offer to her?
What will be an ideal response?
First, all women should discuss their exercise programs with their physicians before beginning. A safe and effective exercise plan for healthy pregnant females includes 30-40 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week. Pregnant females should use RPE to assess intensity (between 11 and 13). For women who were sedentary prior to pregnancy, exercise should be start at 3-4 days a week for 15-20 minutes and gradually increase the duration. Pregnant females should also avoid overly vigorous activity in the third trimester, when there is an increased risk of falling and injury.
