Discuss the barriers to assessment of LGBT clients.
What will be an ideal response?
Barriers include both attitudinal and knowledge issues as well as behavioral issues (Barret & Logan, 2002). Gay men and lesbians might feel hesitant to disclose their sexual orientation to the therapist. Therefore, the therapist must work to create a safe environment for a LGBT client to disclose (Pope, 2008). Other barriers to accurate assessment of LGBT clients include:
-Personal biases of providers
-The client’s own internalized homophobia
-The therapist’s lack of information and knowledge about an LGBT population
