Explain what a DNR is and why having one, or not, is a relevant social issue.

What will be an ideal response?

1. A DNR is a “do not resuscitate” order for medical caregivers, meaning an individual who has a DNR does not want, should the need arise, heroic medical interventions to be performed on their behalf.
2. Having a DNR can play an important role in guiding end-of-life wishes and decision making. Often, family members who are faced with such decisions struggle to decide what is the best thing to do.
3. When patients to not have DNRs doctors have to provide medical treatment to sustain life, which can be extraordinarily expensive for both hospitals and the taxpayer-funded Medicare system.
Learning Objective: 8.4.2 Discuss end-of-life options.
