Anorexia is characterized by voluntary starvation, while bulimia nervosa is
characterized by bingeing and purging. For anorexia to be diagnosed, the following
symptoms must be present: refusal to maintain a weight that is at least 85% of
normal BMI, intense fear of weight gain, disturbed/distorted body perception, and
absence of a menstrual period. For bulimia to be diagnosed, the following symptoms
must be present: bingeing and purging at least one time per week for 3 months,
uncontrollable urges to eat, and distorted perception of body size.
