Trina and Samuel had their children removed from their home six months ago by the social service in their jurisdiction having the authority to remove endangered children. When the children were removed, the couple had to appear before the court. The court told them that it is the intent of the state to keep the family unit together, and they agreed. However, the court, and their attorney, told them that certain work must be done to satisfy the return of the children to a safe home. Now the couple is back in court to see if the court is pleased with their progress. What were some of the expectations or steps the couple had to take for reunification?
What will be an ideal response?
Trina and Samuel may have had to complete a substance abuse treatment program, and probably had to attend parenting classes or undergo domestic violence counseling. They should have visited the children as often as was permitted by the agency. The parents had to make their whereabouts known to the agency, as well as their attorney. Additionally, they had to find a legal means of income and secure adequate housing-and have no other contact with the criminal justice system. Trina and Samuel feel that they have met those requirements to the agency's and court's satisfaction, so their attorney has made a motion to revoke the commitment proceedings. However, if the court finds that the couple has failed, the commitment will be extended and reunification of the family will be denied for the jurisdictional statutory period.
