What characteristics of programs and machines make multiprogramming desirable?
What will be an ideal response?
Ideally, a large portion of the jobs to be run should be I/O bound, the jobs should use
sharable devices or different dedicated devices, the processor should be fast enough to support
the overhead implicit in a multiprogramming operating system (such as interrupt processing
and context switching), sufficient main memory should be available to hold the active
jobs to make the multiprogramming efficient and thus worthwhile and the system should
have a sufficiently rich collection of devices to support the needs of the jobs being multiprogrammed
at any time.
