How could citizens be utilized more effectively in crime control?
What will be an ideal response?
Although very few police departments have embraced community policing the way the philosophy was initially intended, exciting changes have been happening throughout the nation in police-community relations and police-security relations. Another factor that recently motivated police to reach out to the community was the crash of the economy in 2007 . Police learned to do more with less. Police departments opened up more internships and volunteer programs. More citizens are joining citizen police academies and training with their local department as volunteers to help in various capacities. Neighborhood Watch programs have caused citizens to feel more ownership in their own crime control. Police departments need to continue to reach out to the community and work closely with them as partners. Police need to make it possible for citizens to join reserve programs so they can be trained and utilized for preventive programs. Citizens need to volunteer for any training the city offers in areas of crime control and use of force, such as stand your ground and castle doctrine laws.
