What were the sources of nativism that led to the rise of the Know-Nothings?

What will be an ideal response?

Nativism in the United States was fueled by the sheer number of immigrants arriving during this period—approximately three million between 1845 and 1855 . Additionally, unlike previous immigrants who were largely Protestants from Britain, a majority of these immigrants were Catholics from Germany and Ireland. Fear of Catholicism and the unfamiliar cultures and languages of these immigrants led many Americans to worry that these newcomers would take jobs from native-born Americans, would refuse to assimilate, and would increase poverty, disease, and crime in the nation. The American Party, or Know-Nothings, sought to allay these fears through anti-immigrant legislation.
