What will be an ideal response?

The first stage is the sensorimotor (birth to 2 years old). The characteristics include constructing an understanding of the world by coordinating sensory experiences with physical actions. Infants progress from exhibiting reflexive and instinctive actions to the beginning of symbolic thought. The second stage is the preoperational (2 to 7 years old), and the characteristics include beginning to represent the world with words and images, which are indicative of symbolic thinking. The third stage is the concrete operational (7 to 11 years old), and the characteristics include thinking logically about concrete events and being able to classify objects into different sets. The fourth stage is the formal operational (from 11 to 15 years of age), and the characteristics include reasoning in abstract, idealistic, and logical ways.
