It is important to discuss with the patient the different risk factors for periodontal diseases and to indicate which risk factors are involved in his or her disease process. Discuss with the patient how improving oral hygiene habits can influence disease progression and improve the healing response following periodontal therapy. Additionally, discuss the importance of smoking cessation in the progression of the disease and improvement in healing response after periodontal therapy.
