Which is the most appropriate site for the nurse select to place a PICC line?

A. Antecubital fossa, basilic vein
B. Antecubital fossa, cephalic vein
C. Dorsalis venous arch, basilic junction
D. Dorsalis venous arch, cephalic junction

A
A PICC line requires a large vein that allows the catheter tip to be located in the superior vena cava (SVC). The junction of the dorsalis venous arch with either the basilic vein or the cephalic vein is too small and located too far from the SVC. In addition, it is in the back of the hand, which would severely limit the client's independence when performing activities of daily living. The antecubital fossa is the best site, with the preferred vein being the basilic vein, because it is located on the outer aspect of the arm, further away from nerves than the cephalic vein.
