What are some of the things that you need to consider when terminating with your client.

What will be an ideal response?

?Provide time for the client to talk about the process of counseling, and for him to review the progress made toward realizing goals. This is a good time for you to slip into your role as educator, to help your client see the process in a positive light. Even the difficulties could be placed (reframed) in a positive learning light. He can be encouraged to think of himself as a “work in progress,” with this bit of counseling as one set of steps on a lifelong journey.
?Provide the framework and time for your client to talk about whatever personal feelings she might have about you, and share yours in return. Although you have an opportunity to share some of your impressions and feelings about your client directly with her, it is best to wait until she has first had her go at it. You do not want your impressions to overshadow or short-circuit the things she has to say.
?Take the time to talk about the fact of ending, including the feelings and thoughts that accompany this, and speculate with him about how this is related to other endings in his life.
?If plans have been made for further counseling-related work, such as referral to another counselor, a counseling or self-help group, or other follow-up activities, talk about them.
