D
Ask the patient to walk in a straight line, touching heel to toe (tandem walking). The arms should be held at the side and the eyes should be open. Note the patient's ability to maintain balance. Also used to assess gait, but not tandem walking, the patient will be asked to walk on tiptoes, then the heels, and hopping first on one foot and then on the other. The assessment for gait does not include walking with the arms swinging opposite the movement of the legs.
