How does the use of nondeadly force and less-lethal weapons address the use of deadly force? What are the results of applying these practices, and are there any issues with using them?
What will be an ideal response?
Nondeadly force can range from the use of handcuffs and suspect compliance techniques to rubber bullets and stun guns. These approaches are an attempt not to use deadly force either through the use of less-lethal weapons or utilizing the force continuum. Nondeadly force is used more often than deadly force, although it is still rare, used in only 1.7 percent of all contacts and 20 percent of arrests. Research has suggested that using less-lethal weapons may reduce police use of force. Some less-lethal weapons include Tasers, guns that shoot giant nets and rubber bullets, and lights that temporarily blind a subject. Tasers have created some questions as to whether a suspect who is Tased has the mental capacity to answer questions afterward. One study conducted suggested that the effects of the Taser can produce confusion, although it clears it up quickly after the incident.
