Many individuals have the erroneous idea that individuals who are obese simply lack willpower and could lose weight if they only tried. Argue against this belief.

What will be an ideal response?

Research suggests that food can be addictive, similar to drugs and alcohol. In this vein, individuals often try to regulate their eating behaviors unsuccessfully, similar to that of someone with a substance addiction. It is even harder for someone trying to give up food, given that an alcoholic can "walk away" from alcohol completely. Everyone, however, needs to eat. Metabolism can also complicate the issue. Some people appear to have a thrifty metabolism, whereas others are less efficient. The same compensatory mechanisms that work for one person are not guaranteed to work for another.
