A steady stream of cars and pedestrians jammed the streets around the Holt Street Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. By early evening a patient, orderly, and determined crowd of over 5,000 African Americans had packed the church and spilled over onto the sidewalks. We are here in a general sense because first and foremost we are American citizens and we are determined to apply our citizenship to the fullness of its means.” Rosa Parks, a seamstress and well-known activist in Montgomery’s African American community, had been arrested and put in jail for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger.
