List and explain the reasons for Pope Urban II’s instigation of the First Crusade, and compare and/or contrast them to the reasons provided for a later—or perhaps contemporary—instance of warfare with which you are familiar
Please provide the best answer for the statement.
1) The First Crusade was motivated by several forces: religious zeal, the desire to reduce conflict at home by sending off Europe’s feuding aristocrats, defending Christendom from barbarity, the promise of monetary reward otherwise unavailable to the disenfranchised young nobility, and the nobility’s desire for adventure
2) Throughout Christendom under Urban II, there was a widespread desire to regain free access to Jerusalem, which had been captured by the Arabs in 638.
3) At the same time, there was a great need to restore peace to Europe: because of the feudal primogeniture system, large numbers of aristocratic younger brothers were disinherited and left to their own devices and had thus taken to feuding with one another (and with their elder brothers) and raiding other people’s land. The Crusades organized these disenfranchised men with the promise of reward, both monetary and spiritual.
4) The pope also presented the Crusades as a Holy War.
5) Students’ comparison/contrast with a later instance of warfare will vary
