The terms acquaintance rape and date rape refer to unwanted sexual intercourse, oral sex, anal sex, or other sexual contact through the use of force or threat of force by casual or intimate dating partners. There is no crime called "date rape." This is a social term used to explain the context under which the crime is occurring; it brings attention to the fact that rape occurs within dating relationships. The legal term for date rape is simply rape. Studies on the prevalence of acquaintance rape have indicated shocking rates of occurrence.
