The purpose of providing opportunities for all types of independent practice is to develop automatic responses in students. The following guidelines promote effective practice:
? Students should understand the reason for practice. To avoid practice becoming busy work, students should understand the purpose of the practice and it occurs during and following learning.
? Effective practice is delivered in a manner that is brief, non-evaluative, and supportive to accomplish three objectives: to inform learners that they can succeed, to dispel anxiety through the use of non-evaluative and non-threatening language, and to let learners know that the teacher will be there to monitor and support.
? Practice should be designed to ensure success. Design practice to produce as few errors as possible.
? Practice should be arranged to allow students to receive feedback. Giving feedback through the used of procedures and routines for rapid checking has a powerful effect on learning
? Practice should have the qualities of progress, challenge, and variety. Students should be able to see progress, exercises should be introduced in a challenging and enthusiastic manner, and exercises should include variety.
As students are practices teachers should walk the class trough a few practice items, schedule seatwork or computer time as soon as possible after the eliciting and feedback exercise, and circulate around the classroom, providing feedback, asking questions, and giving brief explanations.
