Detail the advantages and disadvantages of electronic medical records.
What will be an ideal response?
Advantages: Reduced human errors-no need to rely on illegible handwriting or inaccurate filing.
Safer and more secure-while paper files can be lost, damaged, stolen, or subjected to natural disasters, computerized records circumvent these situations and provide greater safeguards.
Cost-efficient because of data consolidation-a centralized location for digitized medical records can reduce duplication of efforts and documents and increase the speed of exchanging information. This saves labor costs and enhances operational efficiencies that increase productivity through a greater volume of transactions.
Disadvantages: Perceived threat to privacy-some think that privacy via a digital system means confidentiality is lost and information can be accessed by unauthorized parties.
Perceived loss of human oversight-some fear systems that are fully automated with no human management intervention. Perceived lack of standardization-because electronic medical records are still a relatively new platform, many think that the standardization for quality, efficiency, and productivity has yet to be achieved.
