What are the steps involved in physically testing a fan clutch?
What will be an ideal response?
1. First, with the engine off, turn the fan by hand. There should be a slight resistance, but the fan should turn without roughness, which would indicate a bad bearing.
2. Rock the fan up and down to see if it is too loose.
3. If there is a buildup of greasy dirt in the bearing areas of the clutch, the silicone fluid has probably leaked out. If the bearing in the clutch fails, replace the clutch; otherwise, the resulting imbalance will ruin the water pump.
