Explain what is meant by “consideration paradox.” How might this paradox affect students with high-incidence disabilities?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Student responses should include the following:
One of the unintended consequences of the consideration mandate is the consideration paradox. That is, how can IEP teams consider assistive technology if they don’t know what possibilities to consider? The assistive technology consideration paradox currently paralyzes many school-based teams because they don’t have the knowledge and resources to fulfill the consideration mandate. As a result, they may meet procedural compliance by checking the box on the IEP that indicates they considered assistive technology, but they fail to meet the intent of the mandate by actively exploring relevant technologies for enhancing the student’s academic performance and documenting such efforts.
Learning Objective: Define assistive technology (AT), describe the SETT framework, and explain the technology integration process. Provide examples for each.
Cognitive Domain: Analysis
