Discuss the formation of the Andes Mountains in terms of plate tectonics. What will be an ideal response?
The Andes Mountains are the result of the collision of an oceanic plate with the west coast of
South America causing a subduction zone. Melting in this subduction zone results in
abundant igneous and volcanic activity. The west coast of North America had similar
orogenic activity before formation of the San Andreas Fault.
