Discuss examples of specific ways that counselors can employ multicultural awareness to be most effective when working with late adolescents.

What will be an ideal response?

Counselors should be aware of multicultural issues that can arise within this developmental period. Counselors should always be aware of characteristics of the culture the client is associated with, as they can be quite different from the prevalent American culture. Individuals in this stage can be influenced quite easily, and they tend to develop stereotypes. College-aged students should take part in interactional diversity, as this positively effects social interactions with other cultures. Individuals who have previously experienced inequality tend to have a better understanding of the daily impact inequality has on individuals. First-year students tend to encounter a greater amount of diversity than upperclassmen, which could be due to the fact that first-year students are actively seeking new friendships, whereas upperclassmen already have established social relationships. Counselors should strive to understand interpersonal skills of clients in this developmental stage for effective interactions with multicultural clients. This includes aspects of empathy, patience, attachment, trust, and respect. Understanding the importance of these life values can help counselors approach the counseling environment in the most beneficial way possible for the client.
