What is punishment? Provide an example.
What will be an ideal response?
Punishment involves adding something aversive for the purpose of decreasing a behavior. A common type of punishment is spanking a child who has run out into the street. The child does not like to be spanked; therefore, he or she is less likely to run out into the street again because of the spanking. With punishment, we learn to inhibit behavior. The child seeks to avoid the punishment. Reinforcement serves to increase a behavior, while punishment helps to decrease a behavior.
