It enables a teacher to determine what a student can do or needs to learn to do to complete an activity. It identifies the steps that, in combination, are required to perform something by: defining the skill or task; having a skilled person perform the task while being observed; identifying all the steps in the activity; writing all the steps on a data collection/observation form; and observing the student perform the task and collecting data on steps she can and cannot do.
