Explain the techniques that may be used to reduce the time offenders must serve on their sentence

What will be an ideal response?

As a counterbalance to population-increasing factors such as mandatory sentencing, most states use procedures such as jail time, good time, and concurrent sentencing to manage prison populations. Jail time gives credit for time served in jail while awaiting trial or sentencing. Good time, which reduces the number of days from a prison sentence, is typically one of three types: statutory good time (given automatically by state statute), earned good time (received as the result of good behavior or program participation), or meritorious good time (received for performance of exceptional acts or service). A third way to reduce sentence time is through concurrent sentencing wherein offenders convicted of multiple offenses serve their sentences for those offenses all at the same time.
