In the wake of the recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa, researchers have observed infectious Ebola virus is present in the eyes and semen of infected individuals months after apparent recovery from the acute stage of the disease. Based on information in this chapter, propose an explanation for this observation

What will be an ideal response?

The eyes and testes are "hidden" sites which T cells do not normally enter. Virus infections are most effectively cleared by cell-mediated responses. CTL against Ebola virus cannot enter these areas under normal circumstances to attack infected cells, so the virus is not cleared from these organs.
