How does cultural identity of a given ethnic minority contribute to the social worker’s assessment and understanding of economic or social justice?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: The “politics of identity” occur within each minority group and are evidenced in the growth of ethnic minority studies programs or centers on most college and universities, such as Latino/a American Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Asian-American Studies. These programs provide courses that address historical and contemporary perspectives on the role of cultural identity in American Society. Even if a client has not received advanced education, that client system is fully aware of his/her cultural development or acculturation process and its effects on present identity. Positive and negative educational experiences; available and inaccessible employment situations; overt and covert acts of discrimination, etc., do contribute to an individual’s concept of her/his place in society, in a family, or in most relationships. One hopes the social worker would be sensitive to the differences and similarities of experiences and allow the client system to express who she believes herself to be, internally or perceived by others.
