Describe how the problems of older adults differ from those of younger people. Explain how government programs have sought to reduce some of the problems associated with growing older in the United States. Note how these programs may change in the future.

What will be an ideal response?

Technological innovations and advances in medicine have improved the length and quality of life for many older adults. However, functionalists suggest that changes must occur in families and other social institutions if we are to resolve the problems of older persons. Communities also will need to provide social services for people of all ages, but particularly for children and seniors. People of all ages must be encouraged to maintain strong ties with
others and remain actively involved throughout their lifetime. Government programs such as Social Security and Medicare must be maintained and improved to provide older people with needed financial resources and health care to improve their daily lives.
