What are major causes of the “double divide” between and among nations? What factors are emphasized by dependency and world systems theorists, by modernization theorists, and by neoclassical economists?

What will be an ideal response?

Students should be able to discuss inequality within and between nations and offer ideas about history (particularly colonial history), geography (resources, climate, etc.), and politics that are behind these. Factors stressed by dependency and world systems include exploitation of labor and resources, neocolonialism, the distortion of local economies, and the concentration of power in an economic core with other nations left dependent on the capital and institutions of the core. Modernization theory more often stresses internal factors, including the attitudes, education, institutions, and technology within a country. Neoclassical economics, often termed neoliberalism, stresses the importance of free trade and private enterprise in growing the economy and eventually expanding opportunity for all.
