Compare and contrast explicit and implicit memories. In your comparison, include the different types of these memories as well as an example of each.

What will be an ideal response?

While both explicit and implicit memories are part of long-term memory, explicit memories are easily brought into consciousness, whereas implicit memories are difficult to verbalize and think of in conscious terms. Explicit memories can be divided into two types: your semantic memory, which refers to your knowledge of facts and ideas, and episodic memories, or personal, autobiographical memories. An example of semantic memory might be remembering all of the presidents of the United States; and an example of an episodic memory would be where you went and what you did on your last vacation. Implicit memories may be procedural memories, and an example might by how to ride a bike. Other types of implicit memories may result from classical conditioning. The textbook suggests an example might be someone who suffered a near-drowning experience as a young child and is now afraid around water, but who has no conscious recollection of the earlier near-drowning.
