Possible answer: The role of the family is quite different according to Merton's version of strain relative to Agnew's. For Merton, the family would serve as a source for the things that society places great importance: the house, car(s), toys, clothes, cool shoes, et cetera. Also, the family may have resources that allow for sons and/or daughters to easily find a comfortable spot in the workforce, perhaps due to family name/reputation alone. For Agnew, the family is a very important source of relieving strain/stress, which can allow for prosocial coping when confronted with stress from any domain of life. Then again, the family can be a key source of stress/frustration, which can lead to crime if one cannot get relief in a prosocial way.
