- Air bubbles in the specimen.
- Inadequate amount of blood collected.
- Improperly cooled specimen.
- Venous sample collected instead of arterial sample.
- Incorrect anticoagulant used.
- Too much or not enough anticoagulant used.
- Specimen improperly mixed.
- Improper syringe used. (If a plastic syringe is used it must be designed especially for ABG collection. Regular plastic syringes alter test results).
- Improper labeling of specimen.
- Too long of a delay transporting specimen to the laboratory.
