Surface Mount Technology (SMT) involves the soldering of ICs directly on the surface, or one side, of a printed circuit board. Describe the advantages and drawbacks of this method.
What will be an ideal response?
Surface Mount Technology is cheaper because it doesn’t require pre-drilled holes and more ICs can be fit in a smaller space. Also, surface mount devices use less power.
The main drawback to surface mount technology is the fact that the leads are so small and closely spaced that it’s hard to solder and de-solder the ICs. In fact, most surface mount technology circuit boards are manufactured by robots.

An object is weighed four times, and the results, in milligrams, are 234, 236, 233, and 229. The object is then weighed four times on a different scale, and the results, in milligrams, are 236, 225, 245, and 240. The average of all eight measurements will be used to estimate the weight. Someone suggests estimating the uncertainty in this estimate as follows: Compute the standard deviation of all eight measurements. Call this quantity s. The uncertainty is then Is this correct?
