What is a focus group and when would one be used in research?

What will be an ideal response?

Focus groups are an approach to data collection in qualitative research. Creswell (2012) stated that a focus group may be thought of as a group interview. There can be structured, semi-structured or unstructured questions for the group to address, a difference is the researcher attending to the interaction that occurs from the discussion within the group. A focus group also may function as a way to save time, e.g. interviewing more than one person at a time. Typically focus groups are recorded so the researcher can later transcribe the discussions. Also, recording the session allows the researcher to focus on the comments and the interaction and not be distracted by taking notes. Creswell suggested that focus group generally include 6 to 12 members. A group too large does not allow enough talk time for each member and a group too small and there may not be enough conversation. Focus groups may involve more than one session depending upon the methodological approach used, e.g. grounded theory involves an iterative process.
