Passive use of solar energy consists of using the sun’s rays to provide heat when it is beneficial to the home’s environment and conversely, preventing the sun’s rays from adding heat to the home environment when it is not wanted. Passive methods of utilizing or blocking the sun’s rays involve the placement of windows, door openings, awnings, shades, deciduous trees and plants and utilizing insulation.
