Explain the meaning of the term cultural relativism. Explain how an emphasis on cultural relativism may conflict with a desire to promote individual human rights. Give an example of such a conflict.

What will be an ideal response?

Cultural relativism refers to the belief that no culture’s beliefs, practices, and
attitudes are superior to those of any other culture. Because an emphasis on individual
human rights is itself a culturally constructed belief, the two can sometimes conflict. For
example, in a culture that emphasizes subordination of women, a girl’s desire for
education would cause conflict. Cultural relativists would say that culture has the right to
subordinate women, while a human rights perspective would say this violates women’s
human rights. Many other examples are possible.
