Why do think social workers and program evaluators/researchers often operate on different planes? What are social workers who run programs on a day to day basis mainly concerned with? What are researchers mainly concerned with? How might these differences be resolved in the field?

What will be an ideal response?

The functions and activities of social workers and researchers/evaluators are often separated in agencies and are seen as distinct. Agencies often have separate departments and/or staff that do evaluation that are distinct from departments that run programs. Social work practitioners are concerned with delivering services that directs their attention to their immediate interaction with clients in the field. They are often so busy they don’t have time or energy to devote to evaluation. The schism between practice and research is also reinforced by schools of social work where a clear distinction is often made between practice and research/evaluation courses. Students will gave varying examples or ideas about how they might resolve this conflict.
