What vitamin is synthesized by the skin? Explain why this vitamin is critical for various physiological processes
What will be an ideal response?
Vitamin D is synthesized by the skin upon exposure to certain wavelengths of sunlight. Vitamin D is converted to cholecalciferol and transported in the blood for modification by the liver, and then the kidneys, to form calcitriol. Vitamin D is required to absorb calcium ions from the small intestine. Calcium ions are important for nerve function, muscle contraction, building and maintaining bone tissue, and many other physiological processes.
