A hospital is interested in developing an instrument to measure the force exerted by the human finger. This instrument will be useful in the rehabilitation department. How will you approach the design of such an instrument? Identify the type of sensor used; explain its principle with a possible sketch. How will you proceed with the data acquisition and display concept?
What will be an ideal response?
The piezoelectric material produces a voltage related to an applied force. The output voltage would be read by a digital voltmeter. An amplifier for the voltage may be required to achieve the best sensitivity because of the small voltage outputs of the piezoelectric material. The signal processing converts the volts into newtons (force). The processed signal is read by a digital readout if the device is meant to be stand alone or processed by a computer and outputted into a program.
