Polyarteritis nodosa, a vasculitis involving medium-sized arteries and showing fibrinoid necrosis and dense inflammatory infiltrates of the vessel wall, is an immunological disease. It is characterized by deposition of circulating immune complexes in the vessel wall, as is often seen in patients who have chronic hepatitis B–related antigenemia of virus-related antigens. Henoch-Schönlein purpura affects small blood vessels, whereas syphilis affects the vasa vasorum of the aorta, causing aortic arch aneurysms. Gonorrhea and Raynaud's disease do not cause vasculitis.
