Answer: Field work, physical experiments, remote sensing (including seismic data), and numerical methods. Different geoscientists would rank them differently (depending on their interest and experiment, but I would put field work first, and perhaps keep the order given in the previous sentence. Everything should somehow build on or relate to field studies.
