There are four types of job actions, activities in which employees engage to express their dissatisfaction with a person, event or condition, or to attempt to influence the outcome of some matter that is pending before decision makers. The four types of job actions are:

A vote of no confidence signals the employees’ collective displeasure with the chief administrator of the agency. While these votes have no legal standing, the publicity resulting from them may have high impact.

In a work slowdown, employees continue to work, but at a slower pace so productivity declines.

In a work speedup, officers accelerate activity in the level of services to pressure public officials into making decisions in the employees’ favor.

A work stoppage is a strike, the withholding of all employee services. Strikes among criminal justice employees are rare. More common are briefer work stoppages, known as the “blue flu” which involve only some employees and last only a few days.
