Discuss the negative impacts of gentrification. Provide current examples.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Varies. Gentrification is the process of commercial and residential development and planning in distressed urban areas. Typically, corporations, medium-sized businesses, and wealthy individuals take over the neighborhood and develop new housing and shop. This is troubling for multiple reasons, because long-time residents do not have a say and input on these changes. The cost and value of housing goes up, making it difficult for long-time residents to maintain the costs of living as well as their housing. Rent may go up as well as food and groceries. For example, gentrification has occurred in Brooklyn, NYC where gentrifiers want to change the long-standing names. Black and Latino residents were unhappy about this as they have long resided in Brooklyn.
