Analyze the results of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes

What will be an ideal response?

When Louis XIV revoked recognition of Protestantism in France, it forced many Huguenots to convert, go underground, or flee France. The flight of about 300,000 Protestants was extremely detrimental because these were (in many cases) middle-class professionals and artisans, and their departure stripped France of a badly needed class of professional, skilled workers at a time when the main economic focus in France was mercantilism. It was therefore self-defeating in an economic sense for Louis to instigate their departure, and because many went to the Dutch Republic and England, it only served to reinforce his competitors. However, French Catholics strongly approved of his actions and felt that this provided a sense of unity within France. Among remaining Protestants in France, however, it sparked a bitter war, particularly inflammatory in the south of France, where royal troops burned the homes of Protestants. In response, they engaged in guerilla war and enjoyed the support of Protestants elsewhere in Europe, who now saw Louis as a vicious tyrant.
