Describe the three steps to an interview with persons who have disability or mental disorders

What will be an ideal response?

Step 1: Prepare: Before the interview, determine a location away from the scene that is comfortable and without distractions.
Step 2: Establish Rapport: Introduce yourself and ask the individual what he or she would like to be called. Referring to someone else by a title and then calling the interviewee by a first name implies a lack of respect, so be consistent. Avoid touching a person with a disability because you do not know whether this would be perceived as an invasion of personal space or remind them of an attacker.
Step 3: Conducting the Interview: Use good listening skills; allow the victim to tell the story at first with as few interruptions as possible. Use open-ended questions and avoid overly complicated or technical phrases. Ask the person if he or she knows why he or she is there to speak with you. It may be helpful to explain that you are someone who speaks with people about difficult subjects and give them “permission” to talk with you. Give the individual the opportunity to ask questions.
