• The juvenile justice system's commitment to a philosophy of protection and restoration, ex-pressed in the juvenile court movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, began to dissipate in the early years of the twenty-first century. The "professionalization" of delinquency, the hallmark of which was the repeated and often violent criminal involvement of juveniles in drug-related gang activity, represented a major challenge to the idealism of the juvenile justice system and led to what some called the "adultification" of the system. Present trends, however, once again recognize the difference in culpability among adolescents, and states have recently begun to extend additional protections to juveniles facing court processing.
